Kotakuji Temple serves as the Okunoin temple, or the most important place, for the faith of Haguro Shugendo. It used to be the only place closed to women on Mt. Haguro, although the mountain generally allows women to visit. With the Joka-do hall and the Jizo-do hall within the premise, the temple is currently the place for the autumn training of the Haguro Shugen Honso. The current Joka-do hall was built in May 1980.
