Recently attracting many visitors as a place with spiritual energy on Mt. Haguro, this shrine is located in the middle of the third hill, on the way to the top. It enshrines Haniyamahime-no-Mikoto, a kami of earth, born from the excrement of Izanami-no-Mikoto. It is said that sacred power inhabits soft dirt, like clay, and people used to use it to make earthenware for festivals and rituals, and have created rice fields and farms over it. The god of this shrine blesses marriage.

*On April 19, 2017, a tree felled by a strong wind destroyed the shrine, as shown in the photo above.
Currently, the demolition work has been completed and the go-shintai, or the object of worship, has been transferred to the Itsukushima Shrine on the mountaintop.
Please note that the shrine’s lattice to tie red strings is also moved to Itsukushima Shrine for those who wish to pray.
